Wore it Wednesday... A massive bun!

I sometimes use one of those donut things for a tidier bun, but really all you need for a big bun, even with fine hair like mine, is some dry shampoo and a cacktonne of backcombing to turn this...

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Into this...

Better!

When my hair is looking a total mess or I just want it out my face but still going-out worthy (I wore this for Tuesday night salsa) this is what I do with it as it takes about 2 minutes to do and you can dress it up with a sparkly clip or flower so easily.

I wore it with a gold smokey eye that I created entirely with the MUA Undress Me Too Palette (AV) aside from the waterline (hard to see in this pic I know!) which is GOSH's Velvet Touch Liner in Renaissance Gold (CV), set with Sugarpill's Goldilux (V).

Eyeball closeup!

Happy humpday all!

MUA's Animal Testing Policy

So recently someone said on the UK Vegans Facebook page that MUA are not cruelty free because they sell in China.  This isn't something I'd heard so I decided to email them and check that they hadn't changed their policies and happily, they do not sell in China! YAY.  Here is their full reply for anyone wondering and also so you can see where any confusion may have come from.

Hi there Sal,
Thank you for your email!
We can confirm our products are not tested on animals and are 100% cruelty free.
Our products are not Vegan or Vegetarian suited as some of the ingredients are derived from sources not accepted by Vegans or Vegetarians.
We ship to China to individuals, but we do not sell there in store direct, so therefore no animal testing is done on the items.
Thank you for your interest in MUA and I hope this info helps.
Kind regards

With best regards,
MUA Customer Service

Re their comments about not being vegan/veggie friendly - this is their standard response. Some products are vegan, but they are not great at answering queries about it, so you have to go buy ingredients list.

But anyway, hurrah, I don't have to take back those MUA items I just bought after all!

Monthly Favourites: March

Holy crap it's April already!!

Which means it's time for March favourites. I'm jumping straight in with...

B. Vivid Eyeshadow - Cinnamon (V)
I bought this recently in one of my many Superdrug browsing sessions and ever since, I've been loving it as a crease/transition shade. Lovely warm brown.

Eyeko Skinny Brush Mascara (V)
This mascara is AWESOME. It's a bit of a biatch to get off, but it's worth it.  I'm working on a vegan mascara comparisons post which will hopefully be up this month, so keep an eye out for that if you want to know more.

OCC Conceal (V)
This one is a grower. At first I really didn't like it because it's so creamy and I have so many lines under my eyes that creamy concealers just look horrendous after about 5 minutes. But I've learned that if it's used super sparingly it's really great. It's great for blemishes (I use shade Y1 for that) and for under the eyes I blend R0 & R2 (they were sold out of R1 when I bought these but it's on my list for future purchase!) to cover the dark circles then Y1 over that. I really use the tiniest amount and only put it where the darkness is, avoiding any liney areas. Then set it with loose powder, the teeniest amount and it's pretty great.  I like to use this brush for blending out my concealer.....

Sigma P80 Small Precision Flat Kabuki (V)
It's rad. You need it. That is all.

B. Lipstick in Doll's House (V)
This is the perfect peachy pink shade that I have been reaching for pretty much every workday this month. I keep it in my handbag and it works with pretty much any eye look. I don't have much time in the mornings as during the week I go to the gym before work so my makeup is minimal. This is great as it's not too overpowering for simple eyemakeup.

MeMeMe Blush Me - Pink (CV)
I've had this blush for AGES and I still love it. It's a lovely pink and although it looks quite glittery in the box, it's really not.
Real Techniques Buffing Brush (V)
I love my Sigma F80, really love it. But recently I've been reaching for this brush much more often. It's not as dense as the sigma, it's softer, but it makes super easy work of blending in foundation flawlessly.

GOSH Eyebrow Pencil - GreyBrown (CV)

Someone mentioned on the PPK that Anastasia's products might not be vegan. I think that they're covering their arse a bit because there's nothing suspect in the ingredients list of the Brow Wiz. But either way, much as I love the Brow Wiz, it's forkin pricey and not that easy to get hold of over here. So because I love GOSH so much I tried their pencil and I love it!!  It's a perfect shade, doesn't pull ginger, which a lot of brow pencils do on fair skin. It's a nice texture, soft but not too soft that it goes on heavy.  And it has a spoolie on one end which is vital for brows. If you're looking for a brow pencil, I'd totally recommend you trying this one out!

That's it for March Faves.... what's been your favourite products this month? Leave me a comment and let me know or hit me up on Facebook or Twitter - links for those above right!

What I Wore Wednesday: Tuesday Night Salsa & Barry M's Gelly Lip Pencils

So I'm thinking of making Wednesdays a day to post something that I've worn over the last week. Whether it's a face of the day, just a eye or lip of the day, my nails that week or some rad earrings. And I'm kicking off with the makeup that I wore last night to salsa and a mini review of the Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Lip pencils (V).

Firstly, I have 3 of these babies but last night I decided to just take pics with 2 different lip options, as I couldn't decide which one to wear.  So here's a lil pic and a swatch of the ones I have:

Top to Bottom: Shade 3, Shade 5, Shade 1 (look at that, I bought all odd numbers!)

I really like these pencils. REALLY LIKE them. In fact I think there are 5 colours and so I will probably have to go get the other two at some point, because one is very orangey and orange lips are totally fetch this season! (Stop trying to make "fetch" happen?)

They are really lovely, glossy, they go on super smooth and they are nicely pigmented.  They feel really comfortable and also stain the lips a bit so they last a bit longer than a regular gloss.

So here's what I did with them. I decided on a super neutral eye so as not to take the focus off the lips. Then I went and added a tonne of black liner and false lashes! Good one, Sal!  But I digress, a full list of products after the pics.

Option 1, with Shade 1

Option 2 with Shade 5, which is the shade I kept on for salsa. It's a lovely bluey pink and it's really wearable for day or night.

Barry M Gelly Pencils are available from Barrym.com, Superdrug, Boots and some Tescos and cost £4.99 each.

Here's an eyeball close up too

And a full list of the products I used for this look:

No.7 Superlight Stay Perfect Foundation - shade Calico (CV)
Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer - shades 1 & 2 (CV)
MeMeMe Blush Me Box - shade Pink (CV)
Sleek Contour Kit - Light (CV)
Marks & Spencer Autograph Invisible Finish Loose Powder - Translucent (CV)

Eyes
Limecrime Eyeshadow helper (V)
B. Vivid Eyeshadow (single) - shade Cinnamon (V)
MUA Matte Palette (CV)
Makeup Geek Gel Liner - shade Immortal (CV)
Eyeko Skinny Brush Mascara (V)
Duo Eyelash Glue (CV)
Random eyelashes from my makeup case that I reused
GOSH Eye Brow Pencil - shade Grey Brown (CV)
Eyeko Brow Gel (V)

Lips
Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Lip Pencils (V)

As you can see I am not good at taking selfies; in fact most of them make me look like hatchet face! ....

Sorry, I should maybe have put a warning on that!

Happy humpday all.

Animal Friendly UK Drugstore Brands

Last weekend, I was hanging out with some friends in Brighton, doing some makeup shopping as you do! And my friend overheard a girl ask the assistant in Superdrug which brands were not animal tested. She apparently had a list and it got me wondering how accurate it was, my guess is that it wouldn't differentiate the ones owned by parent companies that test either way.  So I thought I would do a list.

I know I know, there's a load of lists out there; so this one is UK specific to the makeup brands available in pretty much all Superdrug & Boots branches (I also added a few brands you can buy in larger Boots); not brands you can only buy online or in specialist/department stores.

I know this is a vegan blog but this is NOT a list of vegan brands, just the ones that don't test and that either definitely do have vegan options or probably do... the only brand I know for sure is fully vegan is Superdrug's B range.

For a much more comprehensive list, that includes online etc brands too, take a look at THIS LIST, which I regularly update.

'Drugstore' brands that do not test (brands marked with * have a parent company that test)
Ardell
B. (Superdrug - All vegan!)
Bare Minerals*
Barry M
Eco Tools
ELF
Eylure
Freedom
GOSH
I Heart Makeup (Makeup Revolution)
Lottie London
Makeup Revolution
Models Own
MUA
Nails Inc
Natural Collection (Boots)*
Nip & Fab
No.7*
NYX*
Real Techniques
SEVENTEEN (Boots)*
Sleek
Smashbox*
Soap & Glory*
Stila
theBalm

Brands that do test/sell in China
Benefit
Bourjois
Clarins
Clinique
L'Oreal
Maybelline
Max Factor
Rimmel
Revlon
Sally Hanson

Unsure:
Collection (ambiguous testing policy)
Essie (Owned by L'Oreal)
NYC (Owned by Coty)
Miss Sporty (Owned by Coty)

Updated July 2017

So you can see there is a pretty good choice of brands that don't test on animals now in our drugstores. High end stuff, not so much. I kept it to drugstore because pretty much ALL of the high end brands they sell in departments stores like House of Fraser are not cruelty free.

Did I miss any brands off that your local Boots or Superdrug sells? Let me know and I'll add 'em in!
